Elements are named after places, scientists, figures in mythology, or properties of the element. But no element gets a name until the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) accepts it. It makes no sence why gold is au,, but in a way it does.. its because it is converted into something else for it to be corret. I believe it is in the greek language area.

In various ways, there's no standard. Gold is Au, after the Latin aurum. Tungsten is W for Wolfram, it comes from the ore wolframite. Silver is Ag, argentum, Latin for silver. The more common elements are from Latin. Pb, plumbum, lead.
