Yes, because they were robbed of thier rightful land by the Europeans for refusing to "Assimilate" with the new majority & become farmers & workers. Read the story of Sitting Bull & tell me you don't think that is just evil.

Okay here is the deal.Humans are part of the natural order.Though we are consciously and unconsciously trying to refute that in our lives. There will always be the strong and the weak. The weak usually become victims. We can see this in the evolutionary chain. The strong will eventually become victim to something that is stronger.Again that is part of the cycle.
However your question suggests to me that some are subscribing to the victim mentality which is negative and a non empowering thought. So yes from your perspective they are victims.
I am saying that being a victim is a little different in that it is part of the natural cycle.
Even with this difference in definitions we both agree that there are victims.
Dont get me wrong .I cherish the native heritage greatly. But I feel that I am looking at a bigger picture

I do feel sorry for them since they lost so much. But they lost a war just like numerous other people have lost wars. Do you always call the losers the victims?
I am a Southerner, and many of us believe we fought a justified war against an over-reaching central government. We lost the war but have never given up on the cause: The Federal Government should be limited to what it was designed to do by the founding fathers. I won't live to see it, but I do so hope a great change comes about one day to put the government in its place.
In spite of all this, I do not feel like a victim. If I were an Indian on a reservation, I would read and study and build and be just as successful as the white people. They chose not to. However, now they are rapidly building casinos, so they all will be very wealthy before long. I think you need not worry.

in the past what Hitler did to the Jews was terrible. The Native Americans had basically the same thing happen when the settlers arrived (Genocide). So. In that sense they were very much victims .

Totally! Yes got f***ed in the *** with no vaseline! Im joking but Im serious. I wont even celebrate Thanksgiving for that reason. They welcomed the newcomers and all they did was have their whole way of life destroyed. Its sad.
BUT! That was a long time ago, now a days its not like that so I dont think we should dwell on it, just like the slavery days for blacks. That was horrible. But thats not happening anymore so I dont like when people dwell on it. All of us that are American have equal rights legally so we should just leave it at that and move on. I dont want to hear any whining about it from people now from my generation because if you werent there, then you arent a victim so dont act like one.
Im not trying to offend or put anyone down, but some people like to whine about that now and it stupid for them to do so.

The Native Americans were in a near constant state of warfare with one another, many tribes became extinct and disappeared even before Columbus, as a result of tribal conflict. Basically as cultures of nomadic hunter gatherers they were in constant competition over hunting grounds, with the stronger tribes exercising their control over the more fertile areas. Not only did these tribes compete for food but also it became common practice to raid one another for women and slaves. Inbreeding in many tribes was a severe problem and child mortality rates were extremely high.
The violent and long wars that the Mayans had fought contributed greatly to their decline, and the Aztec's had a violent history of near continuous warfare.
Contrary to popular opinion the cultures/tribes of the Americas were extremely violent, full of warfare, strife and conflict. Modern archeology has dispelled much of these myths, about the american cultures and tribes.
The few tribes/cultures that experimented with agriculture were forced to establish themselves in difficult, easy to defend areas, building their adobe dwellings in the sides of cliffs. Very few of these stationary tribes/cultures survived to meet the "European" having met their demise long ago.
When Lewis a Clark explored through North America many of the tribes welcomed the alliance with the "Americans" for the purpose of weapons to extract vengence upon the various tribes that have harrased them in the pass.
The America's have a long history of violence before the "European" set of upon the continents.

No one should be continually viewed as victims... it's degrading, and self defeating.
