It happens when you read a book, watch a movie or even when you receive an answer on this venue from a person who really seems to "get you" and you feel acknowledged and validated.
I hope that the people that you do have in your face to face world appreciate that you are compassionate to care about such a thing.

I've had way too many people touch my heart without ever having met them, to ever disagree with this statement. I've fallen in love with someone who lives over seas. The people in my books, even if they aren't real, always bring tears to my eyes as the tug at my heart strings. The fact of all these sad, desperate people all over the world need someone there for them and I can't be, tugs at me. Sometimes I wish I could help everyone, but I can't. It would take more than one of me to help them. And it's not just the homeless people who need help. It's the people who are so desperate for attention and love, so depressed and tired of life, too. Those people who are always there for me, though not in person, when I need them to be. If I need a question answered, if I need comforting because of a loss, if I just need someone to talk to, and vice versa.
Seeing someone face-to-face doesn't mean anything more or less than getting in their heads in a book, online, on the television, in a letter, on the phone, or any other communicational means. It isn't personal presence that makes you feel something for another. Unless you are cold-hearted, there will always be someone out there that has a piece of you with them that they don't know is there.

Children, who they show over seas who are hungry who don't have a safe place to go. Children right here in the states, who don't have meals except for the ones they are fortunate enough to have at school. Children who are sick. Children who's parent's give up being together and the children have to pay the consequences. All Children actually touch my heart.
