I have tried to make brownies in a reflector oven in the Sierra Nevada mountins on a windy day and trust me, both rocks and egg shells ended up in the brownies.
Oh! You mean desert!!
Seriously, at one time( I should say many times), much of the land that is now above sea level was under water. Due to the shifting levels of the ocean and volcanic turmoil, these areas sometimes end up above the sea; sometimes as mountain tops, sometimes as deserts. I have gone exploring for fossils in Montana and found prehistoric sea creatures way up in the mountains. We look at the earth in a very narrow time frame, one which makes sense to us from our own personal experience.
But the earth has been and will continue to change forever.
Nothing is static.

I m assuming you meant "DESERT" as rocks and shells in a cake would taste pretty nasty.
Shells are remanents (lets cal them bones) of animals. These bones can be from mollusks or sea animals. There were pre-historic lakes and waterways that have long dissapeared (Lake Bonneville that covered most of Utah). So, it wouldn't be surprising to find shells in a dessert

In ancient times, many places that are now deserts were actually underwater because warmer temperatures created a higher sea level. Many scientists believe the same thing is starting to happen again with global warming.
