Oxygen and selenium are in the same group, but different periods. Groups are atoms that have similar properties. They are the vertical columns of the periodic table.

Periods are the rows of the periodic table.

Oxygen is in the second row while selenium is in the fourth row.

they are in the same group since they are in the same column
they have similar properties and valences if that helps
