My husband found a rabbit in our yard before he got in our car to go to work. It was someone's former housepet. I posted a message in a local forum and finally about an hour ago i got this reply from someones neighbor... I can only assume that the person who just abandoned this creature lives a duplex or two away from me. :(

"My neighbors were unable to care fo rthe rabbit and
let him go outside.. they won him at the county
fair... it is yours if you want him. Very friendly."

Should I even respond to the woman who notified me?

I feel this is not right, as domesticated animals are not equiped and practised with skills too survive on their own without depending on the owner. I do believe if the owner cannot/does'nt want too care for the animal, they should and could simply refer it too the humane soceity (excuse my possible incorrect spelling). It is fair that the owner gets what he she wants, and the animal can still survive easily and healthy, and recieve a new caring owner. win win situation.

I can't understand the logic one uses to dump an animal. I suppose they truly believe someone will take the animal in, when in fact, the animal is left to wander in a strange area, dodge traffic, hide from other animals, search for a safe place when they are exhausted from running. Rummaging for scraps of food, drinking any water they can find and vulnerable to unkind people that find hurting stray animals fun.
Which is more humane to dump an animal or do the responsible thing and take it to a shelter? Some would say, at least it's alive! But what kind of life does an animal have living off the streets? I've seen it too many times, animals so emaciated you can see every bone, even the skull is sunken in. Open oozing sores, burn marks, cuts and bruises, infested with fleas and ticks, their feces is nothing but blood and worms.
It really infuriates me to know that this was someone pets and this pets probably stayed loyal to it's owner to the end, trusting the owner enough to go with it, only to be dumped somewhere far from home.
People, PLEASE, PLEASE do the right thing!

Actually I think the woman who responded is almost as bad as the original couple. She seems to have prior knowledge that it was just wandering around out there. You did the right thing by posting and if you can't keep it, hand over all the details you have to your local shelter. Alternately, maybe the school would like it for a classroom pet? This might be an option if you only have kill shelters in your area.

Respond to the woman who notified you, at least she took the time.

Keep the bunny if you can, if not, I'll bet there's some sort of bunny rescue organization (there seems to be one for about any other animal/breed) you can find on-line. Or maybe just put an ad in the paper.

I hate how people become so obsessed and fond of the idea of having a pet until it comes to taking care of it. The people who had my cat before me abandoned her because she became pregnant and they never forked over the money to have her fixed. I have seen people abandon kittens in the park instead of taking them to the animal shelter(which most of the ones where I'm from are No Kill).

That's terrible when someone abandons any companion animal like that.....

BTW, rabbits can make very cool house pets. They actually can be trained to use one place to 'do their business' in and with gentle handling and love, they can become very loving and even playful. My sister and brother-in-law kept a house rabbit when I was a kid and she was really fun.

I think you should let the SPCA know about this. If nothing comes of this situation at least there will be some record of these idiots' behaviour and they may go talk to these idiots as well.
Thank God for people like you that care.

If they didn't want him to begin with why did they bother doing whatever it was to win him. That's sad. Take him in and call him your own or maybe you could put him in the paper and someone would give him a good home.

I would tell her that she needs to let the owners know they were extrememly irresponsible and let her know of welfare organisations in your area that are set up for situations like hers. She has commited attempted murder through negligence.

Aarrrghh- that makes me so mad!

Unfortunately it's usually a case of them not knowing what to do. Please enlighten them so in future they know they have a choice other than being negligent
