You go to the doctor, you get a throat or nose culture and the results will tell you. If you are asking whether a person can tell the difference between a cold and the flu, the flu is more commonly associated with body aches and fever, whereas a cold is usually congestion and coughing.

Yes with a cold it only lasted 3 days to a week and I didn't have a fever.
With the flu I would have it for like 2 weeks and have a fever.
With a virus I throw up...lol

With the flu virus you have aches and pains that you don't normally have with the cold. The flu also lasts longer than a cold.

I haven't caught the flu since I've been an adult as far as I know, so I'm not sure. Nevertheless, I think with a flu the fever, body aches and nausea would be a clue.

Generally, when someone says they have the flu, they are suffering from a heavy cold. When you have the flu you know it. Among the symptoms is "aching all over".
