Mesopotamia can be called: modern day Iraq--(not Persia, that was ancient Iran), the land between the two rivers (Tigris & Euphrates rivers), the fertile crescent, and the cradle of civilzation. The Mesopotamians (Sumerians, Assyrians, Babylonians) influenced society by invention such things as the first written language (Cuneiform), wheel, lens, glass, irrigation system (toilets), soap, helmet, sandals, and many other innovations.

Along with "the fertile crescent" it is also sometimes called "the cradle of civilization" because this was where the first literate civilizations developed, in the 4th millenium BC.
