At first I thought it was one of the TWO Maxtor hard drives I have installed - one of which is only a couple of months old and barely used, but I have Ghosted the drives making them both bootable and have disconnected one at a time. To no avail as the clicking noise continues regardless which drive is active. I guess they both could be bad, but what's the likelihood of that? Besides, when I use a cone to try to pinpoint the noise, it doesn't seem to be coming from the drives, but rather toward the back of the machine, but I don't know if that's real or echos. I have also disabled the case fan and processor fan but the clicking still continues. I'm down to the power supply, the only remaining movable part in the box that I can't shut off though the cone doesn't isolate the noise there. Could that be it? Any other ideas? It's a generic PC that has served me well for about 4 years now and I'm not ready to trash it... Help!!!

Sometimes the Ethernet card will "click" when your accessing the Internet along with a flashing light in there. But that noise shouldn't be enough to bother you. I would still suspect the HDDs. Does the graphics card you use have a fan on it?

The clicking could be coming from the system speaker. I have a dell system at work that would make a little tapping sound every time I clicked the mouse. Turns out it was a system sound. From the control panel I selcted sounds and multimedia and scrolled through the "Events" and found the the offending noise. I set this event to NONE and it went away.
