wade boggs spent most of his 3000 hit hall of fame career in boston

and jim rice was theyir old captian and spent his entire career there, so why hasn't either one of their numbers been retired??

I believe the Red Sox have a tradition of retiring the numbers ONLY those who are in the Hall of Fame and have finished their careers with the Red Sox. They have actively campaigned to convince members of the press to vote for Rice... but it hasn't happened yet.

As to Boggs... he ended up last in Tampa Bay. They might place him in the list of retirees, but he'd have to accept an office job sometime so to say even after his career he was a valid member of the Sox.

Of course the exception, # 42 was the PC move forcing all teams to retire the number of Jackie Robinson.
