Be polite and articulate. Don't just gush "I LOOOOVE your books." Say what you love, and why, and, if you ask a question, make it a specific one about a specific matter in a specific book. i.e. How did you choose Artemis Fowl's age in the first book? NOT Where do you get your ideas?

Authors want their readers to be mature and intelligent... obviously! It reflects well on them if smart people like their books.

Treat him just like you would any other person on the street. With respect and honor. I met Louis L'Amour at a book signing 20 years ago or more and when it came my turn, he asked me where the book was for him to sign and I told him I already read all of his books, I thought this was the checkout line. He was so intrigued by my answer he took a break and we went out to his limo and talked about the West and about my travels and his travels around the world in the 40's and mine in the 70's for about an hour. Just treat him as you would every one else and you will find it goes better than treating him as a god or a movie star or some such. Have fun!

if more than 50 people are showing up, u won't have time to talk to him.

at the signing ask him how he likes the city, and recommend a good restaurant. something like "Have you been to the (Good Restaurant) yet? I think you'd really enjoy it. People on road trips are always looking for something interesting in town.

showing this little bit of concern might offer up the opportunity to join him with his entourage for dinner...you'd probably be able to bring a friend too...it's a long shot.

Oh, & bring a small token of appreciation for his visit to your fair city.

Lol, act yourself. I used to do signings all the time and I liked the people that could just act normal and carry on a decent conversation.

i'd jump on them and scream and wish to hug them. the whole thing would be very undignified. i'd probably have to get peeled off their carpet or their shoes and then i'd go home and cry and perhaps read my favourite lit. by them but this time talk to them while i imagine them writing it, afterwards, i'd clean myself up
and get on with life like suddenly everything i saw was in black
and white

No different from anyone else, of course.
