in the dictionary its a ignorant person. such as the question you and i answered today regarding the school buddy.times has changed since years ago years ago it was worse and when whites said it they knew what they were saying!Klan members. people who thought they were better. however, in the bible and no I'm not a bible freak. but Adam and eves 7th son was named cush came out black. so we were to have all colors which to me is nice. the problems with both sides sometimes is the blacks blame the white man of this day which was before our day.and the whites feel that it is now being used as an excuse. we all need to get along and stop this racial crap. we all have better things we can do to better ourselves and be productive. that's my view so chances are nothing will change. like i said our family is now mixed.I'm not violent but let me hear someone call my grandchild a n? id have to count to 10 and hope to walk away knowing their the n. point made. your friend Kat

It means black. There are about 5 sub-races of blacks in Africa, of which one is *****. Early on, many of the African slaves were from Niger. Many people pronounce that as ni-geer', but the correct way is ni-ger with a "gr", like tiger--niger. It means black. Where or when the name picked up the extra "g" I do not know, but it became ***-ger. I do not think the intent was derogratory in the beginning. I believe it was a local pronunciation of 'niger'.
***-ra came along, as people tried to be more correct. It was more a slang version of *****.
I was born and raised in the Mississippi delta in the 40's and 50's. At least half the people I knew were black. They all refered to each other as "******", and sometimes negroes or black folkes, but never *****.
Edit: Well so much for me trying to spell correctly!!!????

The Spanish word ***** originates from the Latin word niger, meaning black. In English, ***** or neger became negar and finally ******, most likely under influence of French nègre. Neger (sometimes spelled "neggar") prevailed in northern New York under the Dutch and also in Philadelphia, in its Moravian and Pennsylvania Dutch communities. For example, the New York City African Burial Ground was originally known as "Begraaf Plaats van de Neger."
In the United States, the word ****** was not originally considered derogatory, but merely denotative of black, as it was in much of the world. In nineteenth-century American literature, there are many uses of the word ****** with no intended negative connotation (see below). The perception of the term ****** as derogatory is no doubt related to the fact that the ***** race itself was widely regarded as inferior, lazy, simian-like in appearance, stupid, and criminally inclined, by many whites of the time.

I think it came from the area that slaves were originally purchased I don't think it was derogatory in the beginning. The names that followed were to be less offensive but even those names were later considered derogatory.i e. negroes colored...

To those respondents who claim the word ****** in the dictionary is defined as an ignorant please list the dictionary, date of publication and edition.
The word "******" is the result of dominant colonial imperial slavery labeling the darker skinned Humans of Africa. It means the same as "black," "*****," "nigre," or "niger." The etymology seems to be derivative of the Latin "niger." This etymology was challenged in a book by J. A. Rogers called "Sex & Race." He says that the word has African origins. Unfortunately he does not go much further with the subject. The website that I have listed makes several references such as "Negus," which was used for parricularly for the title of the Absynnian kings. The information on this site is compelling. Here is a sample:
"WORDS OF AFRICAN ORIGINS THAT CAME FROM THE ORIGINAL WORD, "N-G-R" (PROUNOUNCED EN-JER)
N-g-r (Egyptian;pronounced en-jer) = God
N-t-y-r (Egypt; pronounced net-ger) = God, Devine
Negash (Ethiopia; ne-gash) = King
Negus (Ethiopia; ne-goos) = Emperor
Nkosi (Xhosa; en-kosi) = God
Ndaba (Zulu; en-daba) = Counsil/Officials,
Naga (East Indian, Nubian = People
Nugarmarta (West African = People (See the writings of Ibn Buttata's journey to West Africa) "
When members of the Human family from Europe, set upon the members of the Human family from Africa and the rest of the world, they felt a need to catalogue or lable then. The early British ship manifest show that the only two classification for the Humans from Africa was infidel or pagan. They referred to Humans from Europe as Christian. Later the designations referring to skin colour became common. The reference to Europeans as "white" is relatively recent, (See Link) and is indicative of either some inability to see colour or mental deficiency. After all if one describes oneself as something that one visibly is not, with the intention of establishing superiority based on something so trivial as skin pigment, then mental illness must not be ruled out as a cause. It is ironic, that the people that describe the Humans that are doing the work, that they should do for themselves as lazy, indolent, or ignorant. That is some twisted gratitude, for the groups that has actually made them rich and powerfull.
It is not only primitive thinking, but also a grevious error to lable any Human or group as black or white. When compared to a colour chart they do not match it. Even Albinos are not white.
The use of the word "******," seems to have been the descriptive word for the Humans from Africa. From what I can see this was only intended as descriptive and not derrogatory for some. For instance, Lewis Carrol uses the term in his book on Symbolic Logic, in a sylogism.
The derrogation was the fact that part of the Human family enslaved another part of Human family with the intention of perpetual slavery and the comfort, power, and wealth of a few. Even in this day and age, most students in the USA school systems are lead to believe that every so-called white person owned every so-called black person. This results in a slavery of the mind, related to the notion of innate superiority and inferiorty. (See link). When the reality is that we are all at least 51st cousins, One big family, hopefully living long enough to grow individually and collectively as "One big happy family," that truly operate on the "content of character," instead of the colour of the skin.
I reiterate those who have that dictionary information please submit it to me. I have researched it and never found the definitons to be present.
*Note: the word "slave" is a derrivative of "Slavs"
*The British themselves had been slaves on several occasions. We share what we have in abundance.
"Rule Britannia, Britannia rule the waves.
We shall never, never, never, again be slaves."
Thank you for the question.

One explanation I have heard is that it came from those who were from Niger, which is a country in Africa. Throughout time it was twisted and the connotation was added.

for me, it's just one of those words that I really really hate, I don't care about it's origin or how it came to be, it's just a horrible name that for me conjures up images of white ignorace KKK and the like, it makes me angry, very angry at those that use it. I just don't like the word, sorry. (I'm an Australian)
