Okay, I'll tell you the dirty secret. It's rare that the quality of your answer is rewarded with a "best answer". Most users don't ever bother to select a best answer.
This means that most best answers are chosen by voting. So, users other than the asker will decide. Here, having a good answer is actually helpful most of the time, but you can still get screwed by capricious votes.
So, here's the dirty secret. Keep track of the questions you answer using the watchlist. When they come up for voting, vote for yourself. You will pick up "best answers" just due to the fact that no-one else bothered to vote.
Now, of course, other people know this trick, and you'll often end up in a tie with other answers. That's where having a quality answer will help you.
All in all, though, there's too many ways for a person who spent a long time on an answer to get screwed. Quality is not rewarded nearly enough. You have to game the system. It's sad, really.

What you might want to do, to increase your odds, is to go to older questions that have gotten few or no answers, and answer those. If the question is just clever, and wanting a clever response, pull out the stops, but if they are truly wanting information, do your best to try and supply it. Avoid the questions that have tons of answers, as it decreases your odds down to lottery range.

Maybe people are just picking their favorite answer rather than the best answer. Or maybe there is a conspiracy, and nobody is picking your answers on purpose. Or maybe you havn't tried enough times. Or maybe you don't have the best answer. All are things to be considered, except maybe the conspiracy one. Anyways... just keep trying, I'm sure someone will pick your answers eventually.
