Could be a number of things. Let me tell you a story...I have the exact same problem with my 4.0L Ranger.New everything all heavy duty and a heavy duty fan clutch. Mine does it only when idleing and w/ the a/c on. Ive come to the conclusion that at idle the fan cannot pull enough air across the trans cooler, condensor and thicker radiator.I can idle for around 30 minutes then it will start getting hot. If I hold the rpms up once its hot I can bring the temperature back down quickly which I couldnt do with a standard fan clutch. You may want to try the heavy duty fan clutch and if that doesnt work try a thinner radiator and if you like the thicker radiator put a small electric fan on to assist the mech. fan which is what im going to do.

When does it get hot, idling or running down the road? IF it gets hot idling, Is your fan running after it warms up to normal temp?

IF it gets hot running down the road, you either have an air blockage to the radiator, stuck thermostat, plugged up radiator or block.

Is the radiator big enough for the larger engine?

I once had a vehicle run hot because the belt was loose. Then I had one that the fan clutch went bad.

IF you have proper air flow, proper water flow and nothing is stopped up, the engine should run cool.

Another thought, the mechanic put the head gaskets on wrong and the water ports are blocked by the gaskets. Good luck. Pops

was the 3.4 motor a new one or a you ed one and the new radiator was it stock or did you get a bigger one they make a 2 core and 3 core radiator and a 4 core if the motor was not new hock a hose up to the heater core and run water threw the motor and make shear if all the water passage are free if you see a lot of dirt that's not good. But i.ll bet you have got a small radiator and you need a bigger won.

If the motor is getting hot at idle check the engine fan and see if it is kicking on. If it is not then check the relay it could be out. If it is a clutch fan and is not working properly then have it checked by a licensed gm certified tech. Also take out the thermostat and put it in a pan of boiling water if it doesnt open up you bought a bad thermostat it happens but always start with the cheapest problem first.

There is a piece of plastic underneath the car( on the radiator core support ) That is flat and forces air up into the radiator at speeds over 35 mph .it is called the air dam, Is it there?

Did you use a 50/50 anti-freeze in your radiator.
