Alpha radiation is often called a "Helium nucleus" because it looks like a Helium atom with the electrons removed. It is composed of 2 protons (+) and two neutrons (0) so it has a charge of 2+. Alpha radiation is the slowest and least penetrating type of radiation. A piece of paper could block the radiation from entering your body. However, if you inhale of ingest the radiation it is deadly. It cannot pass out of the body so the energy is released to the cells of your body. It is often associated with leukemia from exposure to radiation.

Beta radiation is actually a very high-speed electron. It has a charge of 1-. You need protective clothing to shield you from Beta radiation. It penetrates deeper than the Alpha.
