Crude oil is a mixture of short, medium and long chain hydrocarbons (molecules containing Carbon and Hydrogen). Small molecules have a lower evaporation/condensation point and, and big ones have higher evaporation/condensation points.
In Fractional Distillation, all of the Crude oil goes under extreme heating, changing almost all of it into a gas.
As the gas travels through a long cylinder, it begins to cool down. The biggest molecules start to condense first and are collected. As the gas continues through the cooling column, the next size molecules condense out into liquid and are collected. At the top the smallest molecules as collected as a gas.

Due to the nature of crude oil, continuous equilibrium distillation cannot be performed because en equilibrium cannot be reached. For a batch simple distillation of crude oil (petroleum), the lighter (lower boiling) components will evaporate and the then condense first. These will be followed by heavier (higher boiling) components. These remix in the collection container. Only the heaviest (tars and other non-volatile substances) will remain in the original container. For fractional distillation, once the volatile components are boiled, they are collected in such a manner that they are not allowed to remix. This is done by either sequential collection (changing receiving vessels) or the use of a tower separator leading to different collecting vessels simultaneously.

oil is a mixture of several different hydrocarbons..each with a different boiling point. the oil is heated and as the hydrocarbon turns ito a gas. It is collected and condensed. Different hydrocarbons become gasses at differrent times.
