Peter S has a good idea. I like to use vegetable oil to cover and polish the pumpkin with or PAM before you carve it. Doing this, or with Vasoline I would guess, will double the life of the jack-o-lantern. You can do it now and it'll still be in good shape by Halloween (unless some neighbor kid kills it).

Not very long--but you can delay the rot by coating the inside and the cut surfaces with Vaseline. It only begins to shrivel because the moisture is evaporating. Use a Q tip to get inside the carved surfaces.

If you live in the North and it is left out even one night and freezes it is toast. When it thaws it will melt all over your porch.
