everything shakes. it's your body trying to stay warm by moving your muscles to burn oxygen.

your body does a few things. firstly, it reduces blood flow to the extremities and skin to consolidate it's heat in the important areas (your core). Then, it will want to purge itself of excess fluids, that's why you need to pee when you get cold. Just more useless stuff to try to keep warm.

Then it will begin to exercise your muscles in order to create warmth. Muscles burn oxygen, and one of the byproducts is heat. So- shivering actually helps you keep warm.

If you still get colder, then your body begins to stop shivering and shut down... that's when things get bad.

Teeth chattering is just a symptom of shivering. Endotherms (that's you, me, other mammals, birds, and some insects) produce heat within the body. They use thermoregulation to keep their bodies at a constant temperature. You can thermoregulate physiologically and behaviourally. Shivering is a physiological response to cold, it's coming from inside. Putting on a jacket because you're cold is a behavioural response.

The cold creates muscular spasms. The jaw muscles are loosely hinged to enable smooth speech. When it is cold, the muscles contract to conserve energy, much like clenching your teetch. The natural position is slightly open. The muscles relax, the jaw drops, muscles chill....jaw clenches. The Tooth Tap Dance.
