How do you respond, or ignore such comments and how do you in general deal with people like this? (I'm interested to know)

even though it is hard just don't listen to them, prove them wrong show that you can do it!! lots of people can be rude to others but that is because they have a lot of their own problems and take things out on everyone else which is not right at all, some people don't even realize that they are doing it at all because they don't know any different

You can just go on and do a good job and prove them wrong. I used to ignore people who said those things because I was raised to be agreeable and not rock the boat. Now that I'm older, I sometimes tell them they really shouldn't say things like that or I don't appreciate it. Kind of depends on who it is. If they're important to me or not. If you have someone in your life who is constantly running you down, then I'd say spend less and less time with that person or just drop them totally. If they want to know why, tell them. Some people are just negative all the time and don't really even realize it. Opening up their eyes could be doing them a big favor. Their relationships with others can't really ever be good if they're constantly knocking people down verbally. I'm not saying to say these things in a rude way. I've learned that I can stick up for myself and still be tactful. I used to think sticking up for myself would seem rude. I've learned that it's not so. It can be done in a respectful way.

You consider the source of such comments and move forward to prove them to be the inaccurate insensitive dolts that they are.

Use their negative energy to motivate you to success.

Those people are the reason you'll succeed. Instead of using them as a negative they are really helping you push yourself to achieve more than you actually would because you are so motivated to prove them wrong.

When I was in my 30's and drowning in my own inadequacies, I made a list of people to avoid, and narrowed it down to four:
1) People who depress you;
2) People who wear away at your ego;
3) People who get you in trouble;
and
4) People who treat you badly.
You'd be surprised how few people don't fit into one of those categories--relatives included.

...and I feel a whole lot better about myself these days. B.

You just got to understand that ppl don't know everything and half the time they haven't taken the time to get to know you. It is more important to believe in yourself.
