Air them outside if it's dry and sunny. Then soak and rewash in vinegar, ammonia or baking soda (bleach, if they're white).

Try bleach. Wash hot. Dry in dryer. If anything still smells- I'd get new towels rather than possibly spread mildew on myself. Mildew is very persistent, and hard to get rid of. Are the towels fully dry when being folded up and put away? Are they stored in a dry place? Are they being left lying around on the floor when wet?

First, wash your towels in hot water and the right amount of detergent. Towels which have been sitting damp in the hamper before laundering are breeding mildew. If you don't wash them in hot enough water, the mildew spores aren't killed.
Next, put your towels in the dryer immediately, and dry them thoroughly. Don't allow your towels to sit overnight in the washer before you get them into the dryer. Damp, warm towels also breed mildew if there are any left.

BAKING SODA will do the trick. I use Arm & Hammer but i guess any brand will work. Add a scoop to your laundry along with your regular detergent. If this doesn't work then run your washer thru a cycle with just baking soda and water- no clothes. Everything should be fresh and clean again. Theres also the possibility that the detergent you are using just isnt getting them clean. I know I've bought detergents on sale before and regretted it later when i found that they really didn't work. I hope this helps.

If you are letting them sit in the washer to long, they will begin to smell a bit, you can try adding some non-chlorine bleach to the wash and also fabric softener is a wonderful way to freshen the wash load.
Good luck!

Put 1 gallon of bleach in machine and run the longest cycle with hot water. Run another cycle with just water to ensure there is no bleach left in machine. Also, make sure towels are getting completely dry.

Bleach them; use one cup of bleach; put in water before adding towels. This will get rid of the mildew smell.

Run your washing machine through a cycle with bleach (no clothes or towels)
Then wash your towels. If they aren't dark you can add bleach when you wash them.
