It stands for two different groups. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and People Eating Tasty Animals. The first one has been caught so many times violating their own policies (euthanizing healthy, adoptable animals and dumping the bodies) that they have lost a lot of credibility. I don't think the second group has to worry about getting caught being closet vegetarians or anything like that.

However, their treatment of animals isn't always the best. I've heard of them releasing domesticated animals into the wild. Have they ever thought about what the animals would eat once they were released or how they would fend for themselves against wild predators? To me that is animal abuse.
I know that the way cattle are slaughtered is gross and seems inhumane. But how many people have really thought after watching those videos about what would be the most humane way to kill them for eating while still allowing them to be edible for human consumption? It's not like you can use chemicals to kill them like they do on deathrow inmates to make it painless. If they did that, people would not be able to eat the meat. So it has to be some mechanical means that ends the cow's life as quickly as possible. And that is what cattle slaughterers uses, the quickest means possible. I respect peoples' choices to become vegetarian. But vegetarians should also respect other peoples' choices to not be a vegetarian.

Most if not all PETA employees are vegans, so I doubt they eat or think about torturing animals.
