everyone I talk to this about says 'ewww that reminds me of the Little Mermaid'. The little Mermaid is one of my favorite movies of all time, I love it! Is the name Ariel really that bad?? Thanks for your input! (My 2nd choice for a girl would be Melody - which is actually Ariel's daugther's name in The Little Mermaid II! I've had been reactions to Melody)

If you love it then it's great. The movie will not be popular when your daughter grows up so she won't get the reaction from her friends that you are getting from yours now. I think it's lovely.

Before Ariel was the name of _The Little Mermaid_, it was the name of the helpful spirit in Shakespeare's _The Tempest_ (a male name in that case, but hey...).
If you just like the sound of that -iel suffix (it means, "of the Lord" or something similar in Hebrew), check out Gustav Williamson's _Dictionary of Angels_. Lots of angelic names in there.
Oh, and my new neighbor has a son named Anakin. I wouldn't worry about little mermaid references if I were you -- that kid's got a lot more to live up to!

I like the name Ariel and my daughters name is actually Melodie and I never got that from her name. I like them both. What matters is what you like, not a movie people think of. Everyone's name will remind them of someone so don't worry about what other people think as long as you like it!

i think u should combined the names and do it as
melody ariel or the other way ariel melody those would be pretty but like everyone is saying its ur daughter not anyone elses..

Why don't you team them up Ariel Melody as first and middle? who cares what others say!? She's your baby! I think that ariel is a beautiful name! However Shelby Rayne for a boy is just crazy.......

Ariel is a lovely name. If others don't like it, or have a problem with you naming your daughter after a Disney character, tell them you didn't see where their approval was required in naming YOUR child.
