I wish people would stop thinking of Morrissey as a morose character. There's great humour in his music. We also gave the world Jesus (Robert Powell), Ghandi (Ben Kingsley) and Dr Who (Christopher Eccleston) Not bad eh for a northern town. We sing up here because its a beautiful city, there's great countryside on the doorstep and the people are great.

I moved here from Devon back in '93 and I haven't regretted it, ever! I've never felt so at home, especially because I'm a creative type.
Also, it rains a lot here and there's a lot of depressing stuff, so plenty to stay in and moan about.
Back in the Smiths' day Manchester was really grotty. But then, that's when it was at its best. Since the IRA bomb Manchester's been done up and it's just not the same.
I love it here though! YAY for Manchester!

I think you're missing the point of the song. It's from 'suffer little children' and is about the Moors murders by Hindley and Brady, and it mourns the children they killed including those whose shallow graves on the moors have never been found. Hindley took what she knew to her grave and with Brady on hunger strike it looks like we will sadly never find their remains. Unfortunately this means your question is in poor taste - albeit unintentionally.
However, on a more positive note, it gives an opportunity to celebrate a more positive side of life in Manchester and the north west as a whole where, generally, people have the ability to express themselves through music, dance, acting, art - basically celebrating the arts. Maybe there's more aspiration to explore creative expression to contrast against grey skies and rain but I know I'm proud of my Lancashire and Manchester roots and of the talent that hails from there.

'the melancholy mood of the north' wha...? dude, i resent that. jovial would be a better word; i don't feel like morissey's representative of my era of manchester anyway (90s child). i'm more into stone roses, oasis, happy mondays.

Who cares what Morrissey sang? The Smiths were a bunch of talentless arseholes and deserve to be forgotten about.
