I am making small cloth coasters. Regular bias does not allow the coaster to lay flat. How can I make bias that goes in a circle?

The bias I need is to go around the circular shape that is the main part of the coaster. Using regular bias tape doesn't go around smoothly. I'm making 4" coasters, and want to put an edge around it, such as a folded bias tape. Thank you.

Granny...great idea for some that I can make for my daughter. Although, I have a person asking me to make these with fabric that she purchased and wants the edge trim to contrast with the material she already has. The smaller the circle, the more the inside gathers, which also causes the complete coaster to pull together and night lie flat. I do like your idea though. Thank you. I'll suggest it to her.

You could try making your own bias tape out of a knit material rather than the woven material most bias tape is made from. This might solve the problem of keeping the coasters flat.

Take double folded bias tape and run a hand baste stitch along the short folded edge, with matching thread.
sew the long folded side to the coaster with the bias on the bottom, making sure to pin and don't pull but ease more in as you go, then fold over and pull the basted stitch till it lies flat on the coaster, then stitch flat.
Also, a row of lace has a folded edge that streatches more than the cotton bias tape and makes a great edge. It is already gathered and has some give to the edge.
If this is a felt or wool coaster, you can cut the edge with pinking shears.

I'm not sure about why the bias won't work for you but I have another suggestion. If you get some cording in a size appropriate for the coasters, you can cover it with fabric and use that around the edges. Or just buy one of the many trims available by the roll(satin cord, braid, etc.) and attach it around the edges of the coasters with a zig-zag stitch. You can use monofilament thread to do the zig-zag if you can't match your thread, and it gives a neat texture to whatever you use to bind the coasters with.

Gosh, I'm not sure what a bias is, unless you're talking about fabric cut on the bias. I guess, if you're using triangles, you would need 6 60" angles put together in the center to make a circle.
