It didn't increase. Starting with the Great Famine in 1315 to the Black Death in 1348-1350, the population of Europe greatly decreased. Similar decreases existed outside Europe, since similar plagues struck Asia and the Middle East at the same time. The population in 1500 was significantly less than the population in 1300, and 1300-1500 is generally considered the Late Middle Ages.
