Our son has moderate autism. He is attends a specialized, non-public class (paid for by the district as they had no other placements that could meet his needs). The program in a 12 month program, with 10 days off when public school gets out for summer and an additional 10 days off before the regualr school year starts. The problem is, there are no daycare options for my son. We have looked into a few, but none of the regular centers have experienced personel and the ones for special needs kids are full and very exspensive. My question is...can my son qualify for SSI now??? If anyone has any experience with filing...no matter the outcome...I would love to hear it. Thanks so much.

We live in MD. There is a state autism waiver that will help pay for respite care, but not day care....and you have to renew every year and hope they have the budget.

Yes he can, with you as the payee, however it depends on your income. If you make too much to qualify now, he can file and get it when he turns 18. Oh, and if you do qualify for SSI, it's dated back from the day you applied, so the first check is usually pretty big. The families that I work with usually get around $700 a month per child, if they qualify for the entire amount.

Also, I don't know where you live, but here in California we will help pay to have these children in appropriate daycare situations for after school, or we at least give parents respite. I also want to let you know that the school district has a legal responsibility to provide an individualized IEP for our son and provide appropriate placements that fit that IEP.

I don't know about SSI but in California there is a program, I forgot the name (Sorry) That will pay for child care 1:1 You have to find the aid... They can also pay for camp... Depends on your childs needs. I was working with a family... They paid for about 3 hours a day. While his parents were in the house, and 2 weeks out of the house. Either at camp, or in a group home. Good Luck!!!
