The lead contractor has to have insurance, worker's compensation, and be licensed (often at seveal levels, state and municpal) to do fire protection work.

However, there is a BIG difference between being a subcontractor and an employee. Subcontractors are often responible for thier own insurance and licenses. Most likely you can perform work under the "permit" that main contactor pulls, so you may not need to concern yourself with a municipal license, but it really does depend on the area. Often lead contractors may have get a "performance bond" to cover work on a given project. Most likely, the subcontractor is not held to this requirement. Workmen's comp is something that an employer pays to cover his employees, not subcontactors.

Pepster... I think it's more important that you ask the question, what responsibilites do I have? I think it's important that you have your own license to do the work you perform. It's also important to have your own insurance and your own workman's compensation through your own company.

If you are self-employed and this isn't practical, consider expressing your concerns to the contracting company. See if they can cover you as an "additional insured", if not, you may not be covered in the event of an accident.
