i had the spinal epidural when i had my son.
it is a drug that is put into the spine (it doesn't hurt a bit) through a needle and tube and it is kept there throughout the labour.
what it does is numb your body from the waist down so you don't feel a thing. when you are ready to push they turn it off so you can push. although you still cannot feel the baby coming out you can sometimes slightly feel the contractions so u get the urge to push. you won't be able to stand and walk for a while until you get the feelings back in your legs..
it was a wonderful pain relief for me.
however if you are too far into the labour (EG: to far dilated or ready to push) they won't give it to you!
i am 35 weeks pregnant with my second and hoping that when i go into labour i wont need another epidural because i want to try and hanlde the pain to feel the baby this time....
we'll see.

A spinal epidural is a med that numbs you from the stomach down to your legs. They use a long needle and poke it into the base of your spine. IV is the needle the they leave in your arm or hand so you can stay hydrated...they can also administer meds through the IV.

well a spinal epidural is a strong pain killer that is put into your lower back next to you spine to help ease the pain of child birth and other things of course, the doctor will use a very long flexible tube and needle to insert it. it does hurt at first and also burns quite a bit. but it is fast acting and will make you feel better in no time, but it can also make you lower half feel like it i asleep but not always. and an iv in just something that they put into your arm, it usually has antibiotics or something like that it in. they will just put a needle in you arm and then administer the drugs it will also probably be left in until way after delivery. i hope this helps. :))

Spinal epidural is inserted into your spine, they have you sit up and try not to move and they numb the area insert and needle like thing into your spine and in goes the medicine.

An IV is inserted in the arm on the front side where your elbow is, in your wrist , or top of the hand. The will give you fluids through this. If needed during delivery they can also give you potoeson(msp) and pain meds through this and also take blood samples without having to repoke you.
