It's hard not knowing anyone. I would recommend volunteering somewhere or just going to the free events that Austin hosts. You can look here www.austin360.com and it should help you find events/ restaurants/ news about what's going on in austin. You can also check out austin.craigslist.org.

go to 6th street, you should be able to make friends down there.
If you don't you will still have a good time

Ok, the first thing you should do, is set a good impression, then be outgoing and funny, and the friends will come, oh yes, they will come ;-)
