Friction in the gear mechansim results in a loss of some of the power you exterted while peddling before it generates the force to rotate the wheels.

Friction can be very harmful if you fall off your bike while in motion as you'll experience the friction generated when your body parts skid along the sidewalk until the friction eventually consumes all of your forward momentum and brings you to stop.

go ahead and fall off a couple of times. Whether you're moving fast or just sitting there. You'll experience the effect inirtia has when it mixes gravity and a hard, rugged road, or a car.
