It depends on where you are swimming or what you are doing. I just got back from there and had a great time swimming. There were lots of boaters and it all looked safe.
Don't go near the water in Santo Domingo. It is disgusting! Everything just goes into there and it is black with sewage... But other places are very pretty blue sea and white sand beaches. Very nice place.

Well it all depends on what your doing....If you are planning on drinking the water I advice you not to, I would rather buy filtered water. But if you are going to go swimming the water's pretty safe but just like any other country it depends where u go, cause Dominican Republic has its nice beaches and its crappy ones so look well into where you're gonna go. But otherwise than that its a really great country and don't worry you're not going to die if you drink the water or swim in a beach that's not 100% clear.

"Macaw lo.." is talking good about your question.
I'm working in diving activities (as instructor) from 14 years in Dominican Republic, diving all around the island.

About sharks ,yes, we can be considered safe. I have more than 3000 logged dives in this sea, and, maybe,I saw a total of 4 potentially dagerous sharks (reefs shark) and some 40-50 nurse sharks(not very dangerous at all.If not disturbed..). They were scared of humans, swimming very fast away from us.

BUT,because the sea is not a "swimming pool" ,be aware that somewhere here, you can find dangerous species.Miles away from shore, usually.

_I find particulary dangerous the boats passing at full speed so close to the beaches,or on the heads of the divers, despite the diving flags, buoys etc.
More dangerous than marine animals.

_Other dangers can be the infamous, but rare here, jelly fish named " Portuguese man of war " .
In
-On the shores, can be another story. If you will go to some "free beach" out from resorts, you will find a " lot of people trying to sell you a lot of things ,souvenirs,etc..The grandmother too,if they can ".
I'm joking,but anyway,in such a case,be carefull.

To complete my answer : 80% safe.

Bye,
N.M.

The waters are safe yes. But this is assuming you are being responsible. Just remember the Ocean is not a giant swimming pool. There are dangers! Never swim, snorkel or dive alone ever! Be safe and you should be just fine.

The water always seems safe right up until the point the giant great white shark comes along and bites the lower 2/3's of your body off, leaving your bloodied, stumped torso to go drifting back to that beautiful white sand.

Didn't you just love Jaws?
