Are you sure it is the engine, and not one of the accesssories that the engine drives?
Low Power steering fluid will make a growling noise (worse when you turn the steering wheel). Bearings cold be bad on the alternator, they sometimes growl. Bearing on "clutch" or "nose" of of air conditioner compressor could be bad,- it may growl, (but usually sounds more like grinding) Shaft bearing on comprressor would not stop, but on "nose" would,- if you truned the airconditioner off! If yoo have a hydraylic clutch on cooling fan (driven from engine, - not electric fan), - it will tend to make slome pretty weird sounds also. Also the "idler puley' sometimes goes bad! And last of all, I have heard waterpump bearings making noises (even though the pump wasn't leaking water)!
If you are mechanically inclined, you can make almost all these noises "go away" by removing the drive belt(s) to the accessories. I think yours has just one belt. If they aren't runing, they wont make the noise - right? Of course you can't run the engine a long time, because the water pump must turn to cool engine!

With the limited info on where the noise is coming from all I can tell you is that if you remove all the belts and then run the engine you can then determine if it is an accesary noise or an internal noise. If it is a manual trans push in the clutch and see if that varies the sound. To better locate the noise take a piece of garden hose about 24 inches long and place it on the engine where you think the noise is coming from and place the other end to your ear.

I AGREE with danno and Guess, remove the accessory belts and start the engine. i feel that the water pump is the culprit. The pumps bearing has gone bad.
good luck
