i am using a dos program that runs in a dos box in a winxp environment and want to print directly to the printer instead of selecting a printer every time i print

Hit the print icon in the toolbar rather than selecting file then print.

if your printer is connected on LPT1 port (and not USB ) and your MS-DOS program is able to print in old fashion way = directly to LPT1 port should work fine. If is connected on USB ..well ..you must print using the windows print driver = the desired printer should be the default printer for your system.

set it as your default printer

Ctrl+p should work.
