Mythology addressed the basic conditions of man as described above. The basic principles of mythology revolved around love, hate, happiness, arrogance/evil, and virtue.
In addition, these concepts were embodied in archetypes, or stereotypes, if you will, to help convey the the message easier. Remember, back when Greek and Roman mythology was made up, the majority of the population could not read, so the spoken word was vital to the passing along of stories. Thus, stereotypes of people who embodied the various characteristics were created.
For example, we use stereotypes now of heroes and villians. Heroes wear white (virtue), and bad guys wear black.

Mythology gives everything a little flavor. there is a murder, love, curlety, and hate in mythology just like most genres today.
