The series you are talking about,with the signature tune "paint it black",by the rolling stones-was in fact called "Tour of Duty".....absolutely fandabbydozzy-brill,and thats one re run i WOULD not mind seeing again.

It is China Beach you're thinking of. It wasn't on at the same time as MASH - there were a few years in between. MASH ended in 1983 and China Beach started up in 1988. Tour of Duty as one respondant said was from 1987-1990 but wasn't known for the music. China Beach featured a lot of music from the 60s which became one of the signatures of the show.

you're thinking of China beach .. the reason for the 60's music.. American Involvement in the Vietnam war ran from 1965 til Nixon pulled them out in the early 70's

Yes I know the one, it was my all time favourite, the theme tune was I think Colours or Painted Black, I can never remember the name of it but I sure wish they would put it on again even if it's repeats! It wasn't China Beach.
