it was written by kris kristofferson prior to 1970(the year it won CMA"s song of the year) he was living in a condemmed tennament working in a bar. it was about his situation, his wife and daughter moved back to california and it is telling how loanly sundays are without your family, concedering sunday is the day for church and family get togethers.since the bars dont open until the afternoons the mornings are the worse part of the day.he started working as a janitor in columbia reacords and was told that if he pitched any songs to any of the artists he would be fired. it is said that Kris landed his national guard chopper in Cash's front yard and played the song for him and June in 1968 2 years prior to Johnny Cash recording it. he worked other places as well with others recording the song but they flopped until he played it for Johnny Cash. Cash said that him and June knew it was a classic when they heard it and was afraid to record it due to the fear of messing it up.
