Sometimes boiling water does a good job, depending on the weeds. I normally use a roundup type poison but you get a row of brown grass along the fence and I don't know how to avoid that. Maybe put a thin garden bed there or a row of bricks or pavers in the ground so you can mow over them for a nice edge.

Roundup. It comes in a pump spray, or as a concentrate which you dilute in a spray container before use.
Be careful, as it is a general herbicide and will kill any plant it comes in contact with!

Some of the above answers suggest using used motor oil or paint thinner. Don't! These are considered toxic wastes which easily seep into ground water and contaminate your environment. Better to take these items to proper recycling facilities.

Roundup, although expensive, goes a long, long way. It also biodegrades easily, which is why it's best to apply it when leaves are dry and after you know you won't get rain for a while.

You mean permanently?

Go to the harware store and buy ground sterilizer. It's going to be a product containing oxyflourofen, triazine, simazine, or some other combo.

Spray on bare dirt before a rain or water into the ground with a sprinkler per label directions.

Should keep weeds from regrowing for at least a year. Repeated applications should eventually kill all seeds.

Rondup only lasts a few weeks. To kill them for up to a year get Ortho Ground Clear (used to be called Triox) or Ortho Season Long Weed Killer. The Ground Clear is a concentrate and the Ortho Season Long is a ready-to-use product. Check at you local L&G Centers

Cheapest and easiest way is to put bleach in a spray bottle and just spray along the fence line.
