A tach just tells you RPM. It is no reflection of how good the engine is. If you have the engine put on a dyno you will know at what RPM level the engines performance is peaking at so then the RPM is a little more valuable,. But on it own , it does not tell you too much.

It basicall tell you the Revolutions Per Minuter or RPM. If the engine is having problems it may relfect it there. The faster it revolved the more gas its burning. It isn't needed for an automatic - just a bell and whistle - although you do know that you don't want it to redline - BOOOMMM - bye bye

The tachometer is more of a reflection of how well your transmission is operating. The tach tells you how fast your engine is running, but with an automatic transmission your engine relies on your tranny to tell it when to back off.If the tranny "lies" to your engine then it'll just keep revving. The engine only knows two things....how much gas you're giving it,and when the tranny wants to shift.
Your motor might be strong as an ox,but if your tranny ain't up to snuff you'll see your tach red-lining.It ain't shifting right. You're just asking to blow your motor!

It can be. If it fluxuates alot at idle with no load I would start looking for a problem. Vacuum leak low coolant? As for as a tack and an auto trans, unless you are racing and manually shifting it is pretty much useless. How ever if you think your auto trans is slipping watch your tack at the time of the suspected slip and it will raise in rpms.
