The Brits only sent 3000 Prussian mercenaries to keep a hold of the US, as Europe was involved in more important matters at home.
As a consequence a group of revolutionaries beat a super power.
I have already apologised on this website for that lack of interest by the Brits and the subsequent world troubles caused by the US. If we had it all over again, we'd arm the native Americans, and help them take their country back.

The "'round the world" part is not meant to be literal. It was not labeled as such until many years after the war was finished.

In it's intended, figurative meaning, it indicates the first shot of the first SUCCESSFUL revolution against a large colonial power. Ours was the first of many revolutions and changes that, eventually meant the end of national colonialism in the modern world.

Interestingly, the colonial period continued, after that, long enough for the United States to gain a few colonies of its own. Only, because of the orgins of our country, we didn't call them colonies, but refer to them as territories. Example would be Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, US Samoa, the island chain of Hawaii, the Philipines, among others. Some of THEM have won their own independance, while others have been absorbed to become part of the 50 states.

At the time, Britain was a huge empire with colonies everywhere. It was the first real battle in the revolution to throw them off, and had worldwide repercussions and implications to their other colonies.

In addition, the principles of the colonists who were the leaders of the revolution took many of their principles from French philosophers, who saw a real revolution as opposed to one on paper, and said "Hey, that might work here, too" and put down their pens and picked up guns. The seeds of the French Revolution of 1789 were sown in the Declaration of Independence.

Because a bunch of Colonists from a puny little Nation took on the mightiest army in the world, AND WON. Our victory at that time encouraged a lot of others to seek their freedom. Freedom is the legacy we leave this poor savaged world. That's why the Islamo-facists and the Socialists hate us so much. Every one of us has a voice and MOST of us are willing to stand up and fight for it and fight for the same rights for others as well.
