He grew up in Central America, I think Panama. He was the light-weight champion of the world. His nickname was "hands of stone." When he faced Sugar Ray Leonard, Duran after a few rounds shouted to the referee "no mas" meaning "no more" so the ref stopped the fight. Later on he gained a lot of weight and moved up I think light-heavy weight but didn't win any championships. He grew up poor and his no more comment, humiliated him for the rest of his career, even though he was a great fighter in his prime.

He was Panamanian and absolutely scary. He dropped many opponents with his hands of stone. Leonard did not so much beat him as he did frustrate, harass, and just kept popping him and staying away. Roberto was a macho guy who wanted to go toe to toe with Leonard. Ray could not do that Duran would have killed him.
