Most elements are found combined in nature. Gold (in the soil), nitrogen, oxygen, neon, argon, helium and xenon in the atmosphere are exceptions. Most elements are highly reactive, so they do.

since they are group one and two elements, they are both very reactive. Since they are reactive, they will form compounds with just about anything around them. So, if they are found in nature, they are usually found in compounds
