That's not a dumb question, I've been wondering the same thing. I saw a letter to Blender mag. where someone else asked that and thought, "Wow, I'm not the only one." Blender responded back and said they weren't for sure either.

Emo is technically short for "Emotional". Is widely misued term that associates with a depressed individual who is alone in their sense of security. These people are associated with hurting themselves and listening to "Emo Rock" (Rock With Feeling And Emotion) such as My Chemical Romance or Hawethorne Heights. I Hope This Has Cleared Up The Term :D

don't go emo whatever you want to do in your life!
emos are kids who go round getting their ways.
here is an example:::
emo kid: im sitting in that chair.
kid: no i sat here first.
emo: yes but im emo, which means EMOTIONAL.
kid: so?
emo: so get off of my chair or i'll emo!
kid:...
emo: I'LL CUT MY WRISTS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU! MOVE!!
see.
that's just over a god damned chair.
emo = spoilt, self-absorbed and complain about the things they actually have that many others can't.
i like their style though, it's pretty cool.
but personality and music?
nah.
EMO IS NOTHING LIKE GOTH PEOPLE.
music is completely different and everything else.

According to these sites that I check out "emo" is the the word "emotion" shortened.

emo is people that are kinda like goth(if you dont no what goth means its where they wear all black and lissen to punk and heavy metal) some are depresed and some are not. they mostly wear black. and they say they are not emo
