I like pansies. They give a splash of color and are hearty enough to survive rougher weather.

If you are speaking of flowers, I just planted some beautiful violas, purple and yellow ones. They came in a six pack and only paid 2.00 each for a six pack. The nursery lady said they would continue to bloom until March. I live in Zone 7 and temperature can drop very, very low in the winter. Go to the nursery and look at the perennials. The fall plants will be out and the nursery people are very helpful. It is also time for pansies and they are also beautiful. Good wishes.

Hi, Along with some of the previous posters' suggestions, I believe you can plant "chives", which will come up year after year.
Garlic, and possibly new asparagus crowns, provided that they are buried well and mulched the first year. That comes up every spring, with the best picking for crop yield the 3rd spring.
You can plant asparagus seeds now and they will start to grow the next spring.
Hope this helps, Dave

Anything you don't plan on having grow over the winter. Why not just clean/cultivate the garden area. Put a layer of that black mesh over the top of the ground and then you'll just have to cut x's in it in spring and plant veg plants or whatever.

Spring flowering bulbs, and pansies and violas for winter colour - remember, pansies will not grow once winter sets in, so just make use of as much fall sunshine as u can get to grow them to a decent size before then.
