Substances that are highly acidic or highly alkaline are dangerous to skin, eyes and lungs. Have you ever rubbed a bit of bleach between your thumb and forefinger? That slippery feeling is the result of your skin cells being dissolved by the bleach (a highly alkaline substance).

pH is the hydrogen potential of a substance. From a consumer point of view, you would want to know if a substance is acidic (pH 1-6) or basic (pH 8-14). Extreme pH in either direction can be corrosive and dangerous. This information is usually included in an MSDS because it's a vital information.
