Final adult height may be attained anywhere from the early teens to early 20s, though it is most commonly reached during the mid teens for females and late teens for males.
Growth in height is largely affected by nutrition, exercise, fitness, pollution exposure, sleep patterns, climate, and even happiness are other factors that can affect growth and final height.
Bear in mind that the human growth hormone is secreted throughout life which secretion is largest during sleep and which secretion can be stimulated with exercise.
It is true that after adolescence, the end of the long bones becomes a hard bone but height is also increased from the growth of the spine and the cranium.
At your age of 17, there is still indeed a high chance of increasing your height with good nutrition, exercise, sleep, and a good emotional and environmental state, increase will be just at small scale though.
I guess you got hints of what to do to. There is a great chance for you to be six footer just with proper care and effort. Goodluck! (I had a book about increasing the height before but I misplaced it, as I remember, it described that any person can grow an almost an inch at any age.)♥

You are reaching the end of your growing stage and there is still a chance for a couple of inches. The best thing for you to do is look at your extended family to establish the average height. If your parents or grandparents and even some cousins, aunts and uncles are really tall then that will give you some clue. Of course if they are all really average in height then you will have to search the family tree to find the source your recessive genetic makeup.

"For males, who follow a typical growth curve, the pubertal spurt begins around age 12, reaches a peak velocity of 12 cm/year at age 14, and then decelerates toward zero around age 17."- Thus, if you are 17 i would guess that you will not be getting any taller, sorry : )
