16y+36 is all of the sides added together
you know that all the sides of a square are equal and there are four sides.
so you need to split up the perimeter (16y+36) into four equal pieces
(16y+36)/4
i think you would end up with
4y+9
so the side length would be 4y+9
does that make sense?...hope this helped

Perimeter is the sum of the sides. In a square, it can be represented as 4s, since all 4 sides are congruent. To find the length of one side, just divide 16y + 36 by 4 and reduce. Don't forget to divide each term by 4, not just the 16.

well the perimeter is all of the sides added together and a square has 4 sides, so take the equation 16y+36 and divide it by four to get the length of each side, which would be 4y+9

since there are 4 sides on a square, and you multiply one side by four to get the perimeter divide the perimeter by 4
4y+9
to check mult. by 4 and you should get the original answer
4(4y+9)=16y+36
