I think it has a definite effect. If you want proof, just listen to the musical score of most any movie. If music did not have any impact, then movie directors and producers would not pay any attention to the score.I think it extrapolates from there to the music you listen to in your life. Don't you immediately change the car radio channel if they play something you are not in the mood for? Have you ever noticed that certain songs will brighten your mood? Or bring you down? When I was having trouble at work and I was looking for a new job, the only way I got thru my old job was to start each day with Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down"!!

It's known to have an effect. In the days when most background music was supplied by a company called Musak (that's now moved to being a generic name) I had a long conversation with one of their executives and he told me about some of the research they'd done - for example, on a slow day in a supermarket you keep the music dreamy, when you want them to move briskly to the check-out you move towards something more sprightly, etc.

There have also been lots of studies showing that the music of people like Mozart or Bach (provided that it doesn't contain any words and is at fairly low level) is both calming and improves concentration; and that the heavy beat stuff - besides having a long-term destructive effect on people's hearing - interferes with concentration.

Some of this research has crossed over to animals also - Mozart for Contented Cows.

Yes, definitely.

For one thing, music can induce arousal. If you're physically aroused, you might attribute this to the people/person you're with, thinking he/she is more attractive than he/she really is (but it only works if he/she isn't really ugly). Some psych studies confirm this.

Studies have also shown that the lyrical content of music can affect your attitudes and outlook in life, which may effect your subsequent decisions.

Yep, go to a nursing home and play Some AC/DC and then try some Nora Jones. The effect would probably be interesting. I wonder what kind of music OSama Bin Loser and his gang listen to? Mega death or Yanni?

No, though some people do try to use it as an excuse for their stupidity.
