The first direct broadcast satellite television in the United States was DirecTV in 1994. However, Japan's JSB began offering satellite television to consumers earlier, in 1991.

Television signals were first broadcast via satellite in the 1960's. They became commerially available to the public in 1989.
Contrary to DavidK93's post above, satellite television was available in the United States prior to DirecTV in 1994. DirecTV was the first to offer the equipment with the service. Prior to this you had to buy your own satellite dish and receiver and install them yourself. You probably can still see these old dishes scattered about in people's yards... they were HUGE.

hi Abbs, television for me is a huge suggestions selection and can positioned me to sleep, yet i'm getting it. i don't watch lots, cuz gram is frequently watchin activities and boxin. (i think of she likes seein adult men in spandex, LOL) final and purely show (Oh I forgort to respond to,,, cable) We had satellite tv for pc, yet everytime a cloud went over provider became disrupted, (Yowee I dint understand my gram ought to cuss?) BQ: Mr, Poppers Penguins with Jim Carey a relaxing movie.
