Sentence number one is correct....
Sentence 2 should be WERE, not WHERE.

I'm guessing you're just learning english maybe??
Umm, if you are, good luck with it!! I know it's hard!!

WHERE is talking about a place, it's a noun, but don't worry about that!!.....
Ex. Where can I find you?
WERE is a verb, or can help other verbs
Ex: They were at the mall.
So, if you're talking about an action, use WERE.

Hope this helped in some way!!
Have fun!!

well...where and were are COMPLETELy different in meaning... try www.dictionary.com whenever u have questions about meaning of words..

WHERE means location of an object or person....

WERE is a verb, it talks of an action in past tense.

in both sentences you must use the word WERE...because they WERE LOOKING, and WERE GOING TO TEACH ---> past tense, verb usage.

where would be like, "Where are you?" (location)

good luck
