There is a lot to consider when cutting down a tree. Most important is how and in what direction will it fall. You can make it fall where you want it if you know what you are doing. I will not explain in depth because it can be dangerous if you are not careful.. If you have not used a chainsaw where you are comfortable with doing it and if you have never cut a tree before make sure you have someone there directing things that has done it before. You can also cause a lot of damage to property and etc too if you screw it up.

Be careful, gloves, hard hat, EYE-PROTECTION, chain saws have a nasty little habit, they like to "BUCK", make sure the blade is sharp, and the oiler is working to keep the chain cool, make sure you're not taking on too much, chainsaws and trees can be deadly, also if there are ANY POWER LINES even close to where you will work, abandon the project, call in the pro's, they'll get a hold of the Electric dept, I work for the electric dept, there is no charge for trimming back from power lines, as a matter of fact, we prefer that people stay away from them, it's just a phone call away to get us. Stay Safe !

First, you make sure the area around the tree is clear, and that there is nothing for the tree to fall on, and then if it is a tall tree, tie it off. Climb up it, tie a rope around it, and the pull the rope tight and tie it off in the direction you want it to fall in. Don't pull it to tight, or the chainsaw might get pinched in the wood. Just take the slack out and then a lil snug. Then, make sure you have gas, or gas/oil mix in your chainsaw, crank it up, and then there you go. Cut away. Slowly.

Begin by identifying where you want the felled tree to land. This is where you want to make the cut. Begin by cutting at a 45 degree downward angle into the trunk. After you've reached halfway, make a 45 degree upward cut to meet at the apex - essentially you're looking to take a pie-shaped chunk out of the trunk to weaken it's stability exactly where you want it to "fold" and therefore fell the tree.
Once the pie section is cut, knock it out and push the trunk down from the opposite side.

Start by cutting the branches from the top, as far as you can climb, to the bottom. then cut the trunk as far up as you can get and make your way down the tree until you get to the bottom. This will minimize the size of the pieces and make it easier to handle. there are faster ways to do it but it requires careful planned and caution.

how tall is it? does it have overhanging branches to the house?
if its tall you need to tie the top and the limbs off so they dont reach the house or other thngs in the yard.. find how you want the tree to fall..cut a notch in the base in a v pattern.. on the opposite side cut down to the v it should fall the way that you want....dont forget to say,,,,TIMBER

If you have to ask.. you should hire someone! Lest you hurt yourself or someone else, or drop the tree on a house, an electrical line, someones car, pet, fence etc....
